• Mountain Gorilla Trekking

If you are going to count your list of adventures, you cannot afford to have mountain gorilla trekking not show up on that list. Mountain gorillas are some of the world’s most fascinating animals and the opportunity to see them up close and even grab photos of them yourself is something you should give yourself. Gorillas are really intelligent animals as you will find when you observe them. These large primates are known to have a huge appetite and can consume up to 30kg of food in a day. But not to worry, they are not aggressive to humans especially when you do not agitate or disturb them. While seeing the mature male silverback gorilla in itself is a special highlight, the trekking experience is one worth taking. The trek can take anywhere from 1 to 8 hours and in some cases, even more if you’re not lucky to see them on the first day. However, climbing through bushes, crossing rocks and paths will be well worth it when you set your eyes on the prize. The animals themselves seem to have become used to human presence as they carry on their activities as normal albeit inquisitively as they welcome their human hosts. You might find them feeding, resting or moving around leisurely, which gives you a great opportunity to observe them up close, take all the photos of them that you can cherish the experience.   • Golden Monkey Trekking

Golden monkeys are on the list of some of the most endangered species in the world. Trekking and seeing these wonderful creatures can be carried out in the Virunga mountains a collection of 8 mountains in East Africa bordering different countries including Rwanda, DRC, Uganda. This trek can be done in the Volcanoes National Park located in Rwanda that is also home to the famed mountain gorillas. Like most other primates, the golden monkeys carry on a very interesting social life/existence that is interesting to learn about and observe. The golden monkeys are usually found in the bamboo forests that characterize many of the trails of the volcanic mountain range. There are 2 groups of about 80-100 monkeys that have been habituated in this park. Once you come upon groups of these monkeys, you can spend one hour observing them, taking photos and exploring how these special animals live their lives.

  • Dian Fossey Tomb Visit

Diane Fossey left with us such an indelible legacy. Her hard work, sacrifice and utter dedication allows us to continue to enjoy some of the most-prized assets of nature but also has helped prevent extinction of these special animals. Sadly, Diane was murdered several years ago but her legacy lives on. One of the most profound activities to carry out on a Rwandan safari is to visit the Diane FosseyTomb and pay respect to such a remarkable individual due to her role in preserving the future. Trekking the tomb involves cutting through bushes and making your ways through slopes. It can be a physically challenging one but it is certainly worthwhile. Making this visit is something we believe will bring much value to your visit. Our guides help you navigate your way to the tomb as you make your way to learning about how Diane Fossey helped contribute to the preservation of the gorillas.   • Bisoke Climbing

Mount Bisoke stands at an intimidating height of over 12,000ft and runs across both Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, though the larger part of it and its summit is in Rwanda. This mountain no longer has an active volcano (it last erupted in 1957) but in its case has a beautiful crater lake that is visible from the peak. Visitors are not allowed to swim in the lake. A climb up Mount Bisoke is definitely challenging but worthwhile as there is a lot to see while you make it to the top of this unique peak. There is a variety of beautiful vegetation habitat that one encounters including bamboo forests.     

The climb of this mountain can take between 3-6 hours depending on the skill of the climbers. You might just get lucky on your climb as well as you can spot mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. In climbing this mountain, we ensure that your safety is priority and you have a fulfilling experience. You will have armed rangers who will be on hand to provide protection against such things as wild animal attacks. Also, you can hire porters who know the mountain well and can provide support for you on your climb.

  • Muhabura Climbing:

Mount Muhabura is an extinct volcanic mountain and at a height of 4127 metres, it is the 3rd tallest of all the mountains in the Virunga volcanic range of mountains. After Karisimbi Mountain, it is the 2nd tallest mountain in the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. The summit of this mountain provides breathtaking amazing views of the 5 remaining mountains in the volcanic range. Climbing Mount Muhabura is a challenging adventure as it offers one of the steepest climbs on its way up. It certainly takes some time to complete this climb but if you are one who loves challenges, this is for you. Climbing down is perhaps even more challenging or as challenging as climbing up again because of how steep this mountain is and because on your way down, you are perhaps already tired from the climb up in the first place. Climbing up this mountain is however rewarding because of the sights you get from the top and the many other animals and sceneries you can conveniently spot once you are at the summit.

  • Gahinga Climbing:

This mountain is less strenuous than most others in the volcanic mountain ranges and it comes recommended for beginner hikers or those who are necessarily not as fit but would nevertheless want to undergo a memorable hiking experience. Gahinga gets its name from the local Kinyarwanda language which translates in English Language to mean “Pile of Stones”. The mountain itself is about 3400 metres high. The summit has a shallow crater and is covered with swamps and various plants. On the way up to the summit, you will experience the bamboo forests, which is food to many primates and you might even be luck to see bush bucks, mountain gorillas and golden monkeys from a distance. At the peak it is highly relaxing and presents a breathtaking scenery of the natural surroundings. Again, it is a mountain that is relatively easy to climb, however, you can do well to hire porters who are familiar with the terrain and help ensure that you have an altogether pleasant climbing experience

  • Buhanga Eco-park

This park is a cultural treasure that carries with it a rich aspect of Rwanda’s history and in particular the Rwandan monarchy. In the past, this sacred location was a site where initiation ceremonies were performed for Rwandan kings. As you explore this park and follow the trails, you can observe where these initiation rituals and ceremonies actually took place. To however get to this point, you have to make your way across paths cut out in the forest made from cut lava stones under majestic trees and a lively natural scenery. A number of things you will encounter when you are at the top include the small ditch with a flowering thicket surrounding- this ditch used to be the place the king’s assistants gathered the herbs that would be used along with spring water for the ritual bath that was to be performed for the king. Next to this is the dark cave where the king would be brought in straight from his palace to have the bath. This then takes you further to a sort of conference location formed with well-cut lava rocks which is where the king proceeds to after the bath to receive a number of kingship instruments along with blessings and protections from the gods. The king will then be officially titled as the “Umwami” of Rwanda. The next stop after this is a spring of dark and cold water where the king’s bath water was actually collected. While there are a variety of unique trees in this location, one that stands out is the three-in-one tree that is actually 3 different tree species intertwined to form one single tree. Hiking the Buhanga Eco-park is a worthwhile experience that will leave you feeling even more knowledgeable and connected to Rwanda’s historical culture.

  • Karisimbi Climbing

This is the 11th highest mountain on the African continent and the highest in the volcanic mountain range and indeed in Rwanda. Climbing Karisimbi can be strenuous yet rewarding experience. The hike takes about 2 days to complete and is recommended for persons who are physically fit and capable. Ascending to the top alone might take up to 7 hours and so the hike is split so hikers can take some time to rest for the night before resuming the hike again. Climbing down takes about another 6 hours to complete. Because of its location, there are a lot of other interesting sights you might come across on your hike- these include the golden monkeys and mountain gorillas. Hikers can also expect to pass by the grave of the Dian Fossey, the famed Primatologist, who contributed hugely to the conservation of Rwanda’s gorillas and other primate life and eventually gave her life in the process. You will also see quite a wide array of beautiful birds on your way up this challenging mountain climb. Once up at the summit, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the scenery, other volcanic mountains and ranges in the area.

  • Caves Visit

While the Musanze cave is one of the most famed and is one that is quite visited by tourists, there are a number of other caves in Rwanda- in fact, as many as 52 of them. The caves are believed to be as a result of volcanic eruptions that took place several decades ago. The Musanze cave is 2km long and is located in the Musanze district of Rwanda. The cave contains a large bat colony and you should be ready to undertake these mammals and perhaps other reptiles as you undertake this caving adventure. These caves have their own histories and carry interesting stories best told by accompanying guides who are also there to ensure your safety. During war times, people have sought to take refuge in the caves and unfortunately, during the genocide period, it was a site of great massacre of lives. This also makes it a sacred on and one the enjoins all cave explorers to pay their respect as they explore this historical site where the lives of many were taken. Other caves include Busasamana cave, Mugongo cave, Kaneze cave among others.

Another cave worth exploring is the Murambi cave. While not as long as the Musanze Cave, it offers amazing view of the Lake Kivu
